My Temporary Pause: Recovering, Adapting, and Finding My Way Back to Normal

A few months ago, right around my birthday, life threw an unexpected curve-ball that completely interrupted my normal routine.

While on a short trip to Las Vegas, I experienced a fully detached cornea. There was no sudden pain, no warning signs, and no recent injury or impact to my face—just standard everyday life, until suddenly everything changed. Doctors traced the cause back to an accident I had a year prior, but the timing was a total surprise.

The surgery itself went smoothly, but the recovery post-op has been the real test. To allow the eye to heal properly, my doctors put strict limits on my physical activity. Heavy exertion and my regular exercise routines were immediately off-limits. On top of that, I had to keep my head positioned face-down and avoid looking up or sleeping on my back for three full months. Not weeks—months.

Now, nearly two months into this process, I am doing everything I can to adapt and get back to normal, but it has certainly been an adventure:

  • Relearning the Basics: I’ve had to adjust to driving again using primarily one eye, and night driving is still completely off the table.

  • Visual Adjustments: As my left eye heals, it occasionally tries to lead my right eye, which can make me feel cross-eyed. Bright sunlight is still tough, so I keep the eye covered or wear dark sunglasses whenever I'm out.

  • Restricted Movement: Having to step away from my daily workouts and physical chores has forced me into a much more sedentary state than I am used to.

Missing my regular exercise and active lifestyle has been one of the hardest parts of this journey. The downtime and restricted movement bring a unique kind of boredom, but I’m keeping my focus on long-term recovery.

Right now, I am taking things step-by-step. I’ve started tackling lighter household chores and am actively looking for new, low-impact hobbies I can enjoy from home while I wait out the rest of this healing process.

Thank you to everyone who has reached out and checked in. The goal remains getting fully back to my usual rhythm and fitness routine as soon as it’s safe to do so—one day at a time.

Getting Back to the routine
